Sailing from Oban to Tobermory is a classic West Coast route. It is a 25 to 30 nautical mile passage that typically takes 5 to 7 hours, depending on your vessel and wind conditions. The route is highly scenic, taking you through the Firth of Lorn and up the sheltered Sound of Mull.
The Passage Plan
- Distance: ~ 25 – 30 nautical miles.
- Transit Time: 5–7 hours under sail.
- Departure: Leave Oban Marina (Kerrera) or the town pontoons, coordinating with the commercial ferry traffic in the busy Oban Bay.
- The Route: Head north past Lismore Lighthouse, enter the Sound of Mull, and sail north-westerly toward Tobermory.
- Wind & Tide: The Sound of Mull is renowned for sudden wind shifts and gusts coming off the Morvern and Mull hills. The tidal stream generally runs north-east (flood) and south-west (ebb), so catching the favorable tide is essential for a smooth transit. Wind over tide in the sound can raise a steep chop.
