Tobermory to Mallaig

Sailing from Tobermory to Mallaig is a classic West Coast of Scotland voyage, covering approximately 32 to 35 nautical miles. Depending on the wind, tide, and route, the journey typically takes about 5 to 6 hours. There is considerable exposure and potential boltholes are a long way off the direct track.

The Route and Key Legs

  • Stage 1: The Sound of Mull (15 miles)
You will head north-west up the Sound of Mull. This stretch is generally sheltered, but be mindful of variable winds and downdraughts coming off the Morvern hills.
  • Stage 2: Rounding Ardnamurchan Point (12 miles)
As you exit the Sound, you will round the Ardnamurchan peninsula—the most westerly point of the UK mainland. This headland is highly exposed and famous for its strong tidal races and unpredictable seas. Timing is critical here: you ideally want to round this point with a favourable tide and in calm conditions.
  • Stage 3: The Approach to Mallaig (8 miles)
After clearing the point, you’ll turn north-east into the open waters of the Inner Hebrides, enjoying spectacular views of the Small Isles (Eigg and Rum) to your port side before making your approach into Mallaig harbour.

Important Navigation & Safety Considerations

  • Ardnamurchan Tides: The tidal streams run hard around Ardnamurchan. Check the Admiralty EasyTide to ensure you are travelling with the tide, ideally at slack water if the wind is blowing against it to avoid heavy, confused seas.
  • Weather Awareness: The waters between Ardnamurchan and Mallaig can get very rough in strong westerlies or south-westerlies. Always verify the latest marine forecast using the Met Office Inshore Waters Forecast.
  • Mallaig Harbour: Mallaig has excellent visitor pontoons, showers, and facilities. It is a busy fishing and ferry port, so maintain a good watch on your VHF (Channel 14 for Mallaig Harbour Radio).
